It is always intriguing when an artist appears out of nowhere and everyone else looks at you as though you’re the one who arrived late. As according to those in the know, that artist has been around on the underground forever you just did not pay attention. And that seems exactly the case for the one FKA Twigs.

The 26 year old songstress (real name Tahliah Barnett) from Gloucestershire who we now have come to know as FKA Twigs seems to have mastered a very fantasy based look and appeal. With a style that meshes all the RnB, Pop and Regga artists of the 90’s with a twist of something that seems to have jumped out of Pan’s Labyrinth and a China Doll. Twigs has definitely stepped off the mark with her unique and contemporary approach to music. In her style alone one is drawn into the illusive story that she tells, so you can imagine ones delight after having listened to her music.

Her sound leaves you either liking it or going in the opposite direction but one thing that I will salute her for is that she is breaking the mould. It is as though everything Twigs hears and sees she consumes deeply and then puts her very own Twigs-Style to it and thus we have her sound. Admittedly I had to listen more than once to gauge where I would stand with regards to her music and then I came to the conclusion that there is something about her that reminds you of a mix of Sade and the late Aaliyah that is just jazzy and soulful but with FKA Twigs one can see the art and not just the music.

With her debut album ‘LP1’, already the star is a 2014 Mercury Award nominee favourite. Twigs sound mixes dubstep, jazz, hip hop, electro, pop and that sound that Timberland and Missy Elliot were leading us to way before its time. Signed to Young Turks Independent Record Label with artists such as DJ Jamie XX and the beautiful vocals that is Sampha to add to their repertoire of artists and songs like Hide and Water Me FKA Twigs is one of the artists set to take this label to higher heights whilst she takes us all on a wonderland journey.
