The bright brass sound of Samuel Jack’s new single ‘Feels Like Summer’
When we go through hard times in our journey through life, we can sometimes experience the darkness of depression and slip into a place that seemingly has no way out and no light at the end of the tunnel. We believe that we are alone in our pain and that there is no one in the world who will understand us or sit with us to help us through those dark times. In order to help ourselves get through our most difficult experiences, it’s important to understand that we are never alone and there is always someone else in the world that either has been through what we’re going through or is going through it themselves. With today’s ability to connect instantly to others, we’re sure to find someone whom we can connect with and share our experiences in order to heal and move forward together. It’s also important to hold onto the good times we’ve had in our lives, as some of the best things in life are the memories that we create; we are the light at the end of the tunnel. In his new single, ‘Feels Like Summer’, Samuel Jack reminisces the good times with a feel-good vibe that oozes the fond memories of summer in all its vibrancy.
Samuel Jack is a Dorset-based singer-songwriter. Born in London the singer records his music in a caravan. Jack spent much of his formative years with his father, a film director, in Johannesburg, listening to many of his major influences from the blues, Motown, and soul music including B.B. King and Etta James. “I listen to all sorts of music, but there’s something about Rhythm’n’Blues, about Soul, about Gospel that just gets into my veins. The history of it all, the hurt, the pain, the joy, the sex. And when those emotions are delivered by a voice that really means it, I just feel like there can’t be a better way to express yourself,” Jack says of his musical tastes. Covering themes from love and pain, to occasionally even politics, everything Jack sings is from the heart and tells a story about that moment in his life and the journey he is on. This authentic songwriting is what allows his audiences to connect with him on much deeper levels, while for him, it’s a form of therapy and that honesty plays a key role throughout all his music. Some of his music has even received TV placements on shows such as Shameless and Nashville.
His new single, ‘Feels Like Summer’, features a stomping percussive rhythm, anthemic melodies, bright brass, and gravelly powerful vocals mixed with shimmering soundscapes and passionate lyricism. When asked about the inspiration behind his new single, Jack explains, “There’s definitely a sense of nostalgia about the whole song. I wrote it at a time when I needed those good times to see me through some stuff. Music can totally transcend time and space and take you to all sorts of places when you’re not exactly where you want to be. That’s what this song is for me. It takes me back, it takes me forward, it takes me through.”
Wondering what wisdom the musician might have to share, I asked if there was a single message that he would want to put out to the world to make it the kind of place that he would aspire to live in, what would that message be, Samuel replies, “My message would be: to remember that there is always someone less fortunate and always someone more fortunate than you. I feel like we forget how lucky we are to have what we have sometimes, we should be grateful for the little things – the world would be a lot nicer place if we all appreciated what we have, particularly where we live.”
