Derek Sallmann – Breakdown, Breakthrough new artists review
Throughout our journey in life, we all face obstacles and challenges. Some of those are easier to get through than others, while some may have us on our knees as we hit our rock bottom. Whether it be our relationships, finances, addictions, or even multiple events happening at once, these are the adversities we must face. Our willingness and resolve to face these challenges are what helps us to grow; to become better, stronger, and more capable of facing each new challenge that will come on our path. It can be the very foundation that we use to build our comeback. If we can lean into the discomfort with a little bit more perspective, honesty, openness, and curiosity to the learning process, the lessons will unfold in the most beautiful way; our very transformation. In his new single, ‘ Breakdown, Breakthrough’, Derek Sallmann explores the idea of continuously moving forward in pursuit of one’s dreams with a distinctive indie-pop sound.
Derek Sallmann is a Waukesha, Wisconsin-born musician who began his writing and performing journey at an early age by tinkering around on his father’s guitar and experimenting with songwriting. Some of his major musical influences include Matchbox Twenty, John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, America, Third Eye Blind, Hunter Hayes, and Gin Blossoms. In 2016, he released his debut album, ‘All Seasons’, and followed it up with his latest album, ‘Love, Future You’, in 2018 with producer Bill Lefler (Ingrid Michaelson, Cary Brothers, Joshua Radin) and co-writers Kyler England and Garrison Starr.
Sallmann’s new single, ‘Breakdown, Breakthrough’, he reflects on discovering hope within the darkest moments of chasing a dream. With a stunningly soft and atmospheric melody that is the perfect accent match to Sallmann’s smooth, emotive vocals, the heartbeat rhythm keeps the mood of hopeful encouragement to follow one’s heart wherever the path may lead. Its powerful message serves as a constant reminder and source of inspiration to fight for whatever we believe in, trusting that eventually, life will guide us to exactly where we need to be and that the magic is born from the struggle of chasing our dreams. When asked about the inspiration behind his new single, Derek says, “I wrote the song with my friend Garrison Starr and we were just talking about our lives and we connected on this idea that life is a series of ups and downs and that it’s not always easy. We’ve both been grinding away in the music industry and she mentioned something along the lines of, “Well, you know what they say, you break down, you break through”. We both really connected with that phrase and created the song around it. It’s really about those moments of self-doubt and questioning when you feel like you gave it all and it wasn’t enough, but then you decide to keep going.”
