Besides this being one of the best red carpets after the Met Gala, 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards is where you can be prepared to be dazzled and film director and screenwriter John Waters, was not short of comical comments when hosting the 2014 awards show. Making comments like “In 2015, let’s make a blouse sell for more than a car; a coat cost more than a yacht. All we need is one customer to break the glass ceiling of pricing. I mean, when was the actual date that a handbag began costing more than a condo in Queens? Why do magazine editors question a $28,000 ‘Puffy Clouds Embroidery Dress’ by Marc Jacobs? This man has expenses.” (See more of his jokes on NY Mag here)

But the night wasn’t all about pointing fun at the ridiculous lengths fashion goes to be “exclusive” with their prices, but pop princess or should we say queen Rihanna was honoured as a Style Icon. When receiving the award the Barbados born beauty said “I didn’t have a lot of access to fashion, fashion has always been my defence mechanism.” Going on to say a little word or two about her haters since her whole Instagram incident “She can beat me, but she can not beat my outfit, I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion” and finishing in true Rihanna style “There are rules, but rules are meant to be broken.”

Other awards handed out that night was to Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen who received the accessories award for they’re impeccable label The Row. The lifetime achievement award went to the incredibly talented Tom Ford, who thanked the overwhelming CFDA community on the night. The invite only event has a community that is growing with 450+ designers joining the board; the CFDA aim is to award American fashion creatives for their contribution to the industry.

There was an explosive first at the awards ceremony, crowing their first official Fashion instagrammer of the year @aguynamedpatrick. Follow his Instagram here. Which means there is going to be fierce competition come next years crowning of the fashion instagrammer of the year.
