At 14 years of age there was one thing that Jonathan Simkhai had fallen deeply in love with, it was fashion and thankfully his love affair with the art continues until now. Starting out as a buyer and further studying at Parsons and FIT this designer had all his stars aligned to launch his label in 2010, presenting his first women’s wear collection. This new york based designer was warmly welcomed by the fashion world and from that first collection he has gone on to be featured in Nylon, Vogue and most recently Harper’s Bazaar just to name a few. Jonathan tends to blur gender lines with his clothing giving a unique motif to each collection, still creating attire for the sophisticated women but as he said to Katie Van Sykle in NY magazine’s The Cut interview “I think that girls want to definitely be pretty, no matter what. It is important to keep that at the core. But they love everything that has that little boyish twist. My girl at least.” (See his full interview with NY Magazine Here)
Each collection has a different take on his love for that boyish twist, creating an exciting collection each and every time. The 1964 English mods and rockers at the Battle on Brighton Beach inspire his Spring 2014 ready to wear collection, creating a sexy athleticism. With clashing stripes, leather dresses and crop tops paired with skirts and pants, this youthful collection is sexy and fresh as seen in the image below.

This designer’s currently part of the CFDA’s Incubator Program, showing his growing success is never going to stop. His love for wool, cashmere, silk and varying enticing materials helps Jonathan create beautiful feminine and sexy silhouettes. Although his love of mixing up gender lines in the designs has made his collection’s be described as androgynous. When interviewed by Exposed Zipper Jonathan spoke about the “androgynous” theme “to me, the “androgynous” elements are much more of a tool to the personality and style of the girls that wear the clothes. My intention is not to make my consumer look or feel like a boy, but to have her embrace her femininity and sex appeal in a different way.”(See full interview at Exposed Zipper here)

Without a doubt having fashion stylist Susan Joy aiding in the styling of previous collections has created a dream team for the label, after her previous work with J. Crew, Theory and Alexa Chung. His buzzing entrance into the industry has celebrities such as Kristen Stewart and many more falling in love with the label. The label’s latest collection being available for pre order on Moda Operandi, Net-a-Porter and recently stocked at Barney’s New York this is only the start for the label. Jonathan Simkhai is not slowing down any time, so make sure to follow this soon to be household name in fashion on his website or facebook page.
